IBM disk's have been extremely popular over the last few years due to their good name and robust technology. While very good hard disk drives, IBM, like all other hard drives, they do fail. A sudden failure of the IBM system normally means that the software firmware configuration or electronics has failed in most cases.
IBM DRVL-18L Recovery Process:
Depending on the type of IBM system, the data recovery process can take several paths depending on the IBM configuration of your system.
In all cases all hard disks sent in for recovery are diagnosed to establish cause of failure. We then go about resolving the hardware or software issue and get the drive to a state that we can perform a 100% image of the disk. We image all hard disks as standard during our recovery procedure. This ensures the intergity of the original hard disk.
We then work with the hard disk image to process the IBM file system and extract the data.
We recover IBM systems from all operating systems inclusing Apple Mac, Windows, Linux and Unix systems. So no matter whether its Apple HFS+, NTFS, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, XFS or ZFS we can recover your data for you. If you are unsure what the file system configuration is we can also determine the configuration for you.
IBM Hard drive systems support different interfaces. Some of the interfaces supported include: IBM PATA Drives, IBM SATA Drives, IBM Portable Drives, IBM Mobile Drives, IBM IDE Drives, IBM SATA Drives, IBM SATA II Drives, IBM SATA 2 Drives, IBM SATA III Drives, IBM SATA 3 Drives, IBM eSATA, IBM SAS Drives, IBM SCSI Drives, iSCSI, IBM ESDI Drives, IBM Fibre Channel Drives, IBM USB Drives, IBM Firewire Drives and IBM PCMCIA Drives.
IBM disk's have been extremely popular over the last few years due to their good name and robust technology. While very good hard disk drives, IBM, like all other hard drives, they do fail. A sudden failure of the IBM system normally means that the raid configuration or electronics has failed in most cases.
IBM drives have been infamous for their click of death hard disks in their Deskstar hard drives. The hard disks will in many cases be working 100% before then failing suddenly. The IBM disk will not be recognised by the Computer BIOS and sometimes the BIOS may identify them with their factory default names or they will not be recognised at all and will make a clicking noise.
These Deskstar hard disks, mainly the IBM DTLA and IBM AVER families, became infamous for their reportedly high hard disk failure rates. It is believed their problems were connected with the glass platters inside the hard drive case which store the data. After some time the magnetic layer started to fall off the platters creating dust inside the Head Disk Assembly that led to massive head crashes and a large number of bad sectors making the data inaccessible. We can recover data from these hard drives.
IBM hard disks are also well-known for their factory firmware problems. Factory Firmware is stored on the disk platters in the so-called System (Service) Area of the hard disk. If one of the disk modules becomes corrupted the whole hard disk micro-operating system can't boot up, the drive cannot initialise correctly and thus stops working. If you attempt to boot up from such a IBM hard drive or read any data from it you would get "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter" or "Primary Master Hard Disk Fail" or "No operating system found" or "USB Device malfunctioned" error or "S.M.A.R.T. Capable But Command Failed" or some other BIOS error.
Currently there is no way to fix this type of firmware corruption at home. It is quite a complicated procedure and requires use of specialised expensive equipment and deep knowledge of hard drive design and data recovery technology.
