  • The London Borough of Lambeth is in south London, it forms part of Inner London.
  • In 1062 its name was documented as Lambehitha (landing place for lambs), and in 1255 as Lambeth.
  • The geographical centre of London is at Frazier Street near Lambeth North tube station, though Charing Cross is traditionally considered the centre of London.
  • Lambeth was part of the large, ancient parish of Lambeth St Mary in the county of Surrey. It was an elongated north-south parish with 2 miles of River Thames frontage opposite the cities of London and Westminster.
  • London Borough of Lambeth remained a parish for Poor Law purposes after the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834. The borough was overseen by a vestry following the introduction of the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1855.
  • The government initially suggested the merging of the Metropolitan Borough of Lambeth and the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, and the southern and eastern section of the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth was to form another part. Wandsworth council opposed the partition of their borough.
  • The borough's first public demonstration was organised by the administration of Edward Knight in 1979. The Knight's Labour administration protested rate-capping and restriction of the budget by the government. They refused to propose budgets. This resulted in 32 councillors being ordered to repay lost interest by the council due to budgeting delays and got disqualified from office.
  • The council consisted of 64 members between 1978 and 2002, emanating from 20 three-member and 2 two-member wards. Prior to this, there were 60 members of the council; currently, 63 members are elected. The 2014 council elections saw the Labour Party win the majority of the seats with a total of 59.
  • Lambeth had the second highest number of Remain votes in the 2016 European Union Referendum with 78.62%. Gibraltar came first with 95.9%.

  • Lambeth's open spaces include Norbury Park, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, Brockwell Park, and others.
  • The borough has a fair share of landmarks, some of which are: the Art Deco Sunlight Laundry, on Acre Lane, Lambeth Palace, Florence Nightingale Museum, the National Theatre, and others.
  • There are 303,086 residents in the borough. The population is predominantly white with 173,025, Asian or Asian British 20,938, Black or Black British 78,542, mixed 23,160, and other 7,421.
