Hounslow was created on the 1st of April, 1965 under the London Government Act of 1963 by merging the Borough of Heston and Isleworth, the Municipal Borough of Brentford and Chiswick, and Feltham Urban District of Middlesex.
Hounslow town was created on both sides of the A3006/A4 Bath Road, which is the main Great West Road which goes from London to the West of England.
The total land area of the Borough of Hounslow is 55.98 km2 (21.61 sq mi). Its land area extends from near Central London in the east to the border with Surrey in the west. It covers Isleworth, Hounslow, Chiswick, Brentford, and Feltham.
Hounslow is bordered by the boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Richmond upon Thames, Ealing and Hillingdon, as well as the Spelthorne district of Surrey.
As of mid-2017, the area had an estimated population 269,100 and a population density of 4,800/km2 (12,000/sq mi).

Areas such as Chiswick, Osterley, Turnham Green, and Old Isleworth in Hounslow are considered some of the priciest parts of Outer London.
A number of major companies have their head offices in the Borough of Hounslow. For example GlaxoSmithKline and Sky plc have their head office in Brentford's 'Golden Mile' stretch. DHL Air UK’s head office is in Hounslow while Fuller's Griffin Brewery is in Chiswick. Aston Martin was also in the borough before it relocated from Feltham to Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire.
Sega Europe and JCDecaux UK have their head offices in Brentford. Air France-KLM's head office for the UK and Ireland operations is in Plesman House on Hatton Cross. Menzies Aviation’s head office is in Feltham.

South Western Railway's Hounslow Loop Line and Hounslow station connect Hounslow to Central London. It is also connected by the Piccadilly line of the London Underground through Hounslow West station, Hounslow Central station, and Hounslow East station.
The three major London Underground stations in Hounslow are the Hounslow Central station, the Hounslow East station, and the Hounslow West station, and they are all on the Piccadilly lane.
