Turning Is Not the Same as Answering.
He had done the work before he rang, and he had done it in the right order. The laptop suddenly stopped working

What failed, and why.
Getting a platter up to speed is the first thing a disk does and the least of what it has to do. After that it has to read its own working code off a reserved part of the surface, calibrate the heads against it, build the table that turns a sector number into a physical place, and only then announce itself to whatever is asking. A disk that turns and says nothing has got partway along that list and stopped, and the three usual places to stop are the firmware area, the board and the heads. None of them can be reached with a USB adapter, and that is not a criticism of the adapter. An adapter is a translator. It relays a conversation between a machine and a disk that is willing to have one, and it has no vocabulary at all for a disk that will not introduce itself. Which is why his second laptop reported nothing connected while the thing sat there turning in his hand.

Ask it something the adapter cannot
The bench talks to a disk through a channel that is open before the disk has identified itself, which is the whole point of it. The draw was metered on the way up and the trace was ordinary: current rising as the motor took hold, then settling, exactly as he had described from the sound of it. What never arrived was the part where the disk reports what it is. It sat there turning and gave back nothing, and the conversation stopped in the same place every time it was tried.
Sort out the reason it stays quiet
Everything after that happened below the interface, where a disk keeps the code it runs on and the tables it needs before it can speak. The board was inspected and cleared. Then the reserved area was read module by module, and once the disk could load what it needed it identified itself and reported its size correctly. From the outside nothing had changed: it turned before and it turned after. The difference was that it now answered.
Copy it now, while it will let you
A disk that has just been talked into identifying itself is not one to browse around on, so nothing was opened and nothing was listed until a copy existed. One run took it end to end. The rate held level and the defect list gained nothing new, and everything the customer eventually saw was read off the copy rather than off the disk.
What went home.
The lot went home on new media. He had swapped a lead, borrowed a laptop and stopped, which is why this was a straightforward job rather than an interesting one. The disk itself is finished with. Pricing came from the published list — a single drive, £300 + VAT — and he saw the number before the work started.
