What mends, what is propped up, and what is finished.

Electronics: a repair in the plain senseWhere a drive gives no sign of life whatever, look first to the board: a TVS diode shorted through, electronics at an end, or a USB drive whose bridge chip has stopped answering. Repairs in the everyday sense, all of them, and they bring the cheapest news anybody on this bench gets to deliver.
Firmware: mendable, with the right hardwareLet a single service-area module go bad, or leave the translator corrupt, and a mechanically faultless disk announces itself as 0GB, or vanishes from the bus entirely. Structures that deep want purpose-built hardware before anything can reach them. No download gets close.
Mechanics: one sweep, and that is allA spindle freed off, a donor stack fitted, heads eased up off a surface they had come to rest on: what each buys is one complete copy's worth of working life, and nothing spare. The mechanism is not expected to outlast the job it was woken up for.
Board swaps stopped working a long time agoThose measurements are made a single time, at the factory, and their figures then live in a ROM soldered to whichever board left the line beside that mechanism. Put another drive's board on and the heads return noise where data should be. Your own ROM has to travel across, which calls for a soldering iron and a programmer.

Each of them answers to the words broken hard drive, which is how two quotes against a single symptom finish hundreds of pounds apart. Deciding which one you are actually holding is the whole purpose of the free diagnosis, and it comes ahead of any figure.

The ROM off your own board is transferred to a rebuilt one. Corrupt service-area modules get put right individually. Where an original mechanical part has failed, a donor part stands in. All of it serves a single end: one sweep across the surfaces, beginning to end, uninterrupted.

What returns is the data, not the drive

Everything lifted clear is verified, listed, and written to media purchased new for your job. Holding that data was all the drive was ever doing. What will not happen is the drive going back into service: its mechanism has made its final read, and you are told as much plainly.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge whatever. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have read those files on a machine of your own.

What arrives most often

  • Almost nobody actually wants a repair — it is the contents people are after, not a disk that spins. The outcome is what gets worked towards, whichever of the two words came up over the telephone, and you will hear plainly which of them your own disk belongs to.
  • The swap that never gets mentioned — a laptop that comes back from a cheap repair running beautifully has usually had a blank disk put in it. Ask where the original went, and put that question while the bill is still unpaid.
  • Electrical faults sit at the cheap end — a spike ends a board without ever touching the recording surfaces, which makes these the fastest jobs on the bench and the simplest to price.
  • Donor heads buy a read, not reliability — one clean sweep is the whole of what a fitted stack is good for. Sell that on as a serviceable drive and you have simply booked somebody's next failure.

Set down here, and held to: a board is an ordinary repair and so is firmware. Mechanical parts are borrowed for exactly one copy. Scour the coating off a platter and what was underneath it does not return, in this laboratory or any other, however the advertising is worded. Those three lines have not altered in years, and badges from Seagate, Toshiba, Western Digital and Hitachi keep arriving out of London, Wandsworth, Hackney and Islington. One disk sits at £300 + VAT, put in writing when the free look ends, and most jobs carry no fee where nothing is recovered. Should some firm offer to give you the broken drive back in a state fit for daily use, hold the offer up against that firm's small print and count what is left.

The shop fitted a new disk; every essay was still on the old one.

A repair shop told her the 1TB Seagate out of her Dell was no good and that her files could not be got back; it fitted a new drive and, to its credit, handed the old one over. Such a verdict describes that shop's own bench. Here the disk went onto PC-3000 so the real fault could be named, was imaged behind a write blocker, and her photographs and emails were read out of that image.

Questions answered before you commit.

Is a hard drive that has failed repairable at all?

In part. Boards mend, and so does firmware: a rebuilt PCB carrying the ROM lifted from your own board, and a service area repaired one module at a time. Mechanics are another matter altogether. A donor head stack has exactly one job — holding together while the platters get read through once — and out it comes when that read finishes. Your data goes home. The drive itself does not.

Repair or recovery — which do I actually want?

Repair hands you back hardware you can go on using. Recovery hands you the files and gives up on the hardware. Where a disk has truly failed, only one of the two can honestly be promised, and the other is why a laptop can come out of a cheap fix running beautifully with none of its owner's work aboard. Nothing there was mended; a disk was exchanged for another.

Would a replacement circuit board sort it?

Rarely, and never on its own. Adaptive values sit in a board's ROM, and they were measured against a single mechanism — yours. Move that chip across and sensible answers start coming back; fit a donor board untouched, straight from its packet, and the heads give you noise. Moving it means desoldering, and desoldering means a bench equipped for it.

Disks are cheap. Why is this £300?

Because a disk is not the thing being bought. For £300 + VAT you get whatever the stopped drive was holding, handed back on media that works. One figure, set down in writing as soon as the free diagnosis ends, with most jobs carrying no fee where nothing is recovered. Spend the money coaxing a failed mechanism along instead and you end up owning a component you would never trust again.

Nothing gets worse while the power is off.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive switched off.
