Maxtor data recovery, London. An old mechanism still holding somebody's only copy. Leave it off until an engineer has looked.

One disk is £300 + VAT, the look costs nothing, and the figure reaches you on paper ahead of any chargeable work. Maxtor stopped being a manufacturer in 2006, when Seagate absorbed it, so a Maxtor arriving here is almost always an old mechanism: a DiamondMax or a MaXLine out of a desktop, or a OneTouch, Basics or Personal Storage external that has spent years in a cupboard between uses. Two things follow from that age. Lubricant and bearings do not improve while a drive stands idle, which makes the first spin-up after a long rest the riskiest thing that can happen to it. And donors are finite: nobody is making another one, so a matching head stack or board has to be found among the drives that already exist. Both are reasons to read the surfaces once, carefully, rather than over and over. Maxtors reach the bench from Bromley, Croydon, Camden, Richmond and Hackney.

Where a Maxtor job actually stops.

DiamondMax and MaXLine internalsThese are the internals: PATA on the older ones, early SATA on the last of them, and on the PATA drives a jumper block marked master, slave or cable select. Leave that jumper where you found it, because on some machines it is the only record of how the disk was configured. Bare drives travel perfectly well; the machine they came out of does not need to.
OneTouch, Basics and the bridge behind themMaxtor's external ranges wrap an ordinary PATA disk in a case with a bridge board translating USB or FireWire for it. Bridges fail, power supplies fail, and from outside either one looks exactly like a failed disk. Sending the case complete, adaptor included, is what lets the two be told apart without opening anything.
Donors, and a line nobody makes nowHead stacks and boards for a Maxtor come out of other Maxtors, matched on family, model and firmware revision, and the supply only ever shrinks. Boards carry adaptive values in a ROM that belongs to one mechanism alone, so a donor board fitted as it arrives returns noise; the original chip has to be moved over. All of which is why the read gets planned out before the drive is opened at all.
Never done hereNo repair utility is run against the disk you sent, nothing is initialised, no file system is written back and no attempt is made to hand you the drive as a working one. Each of those is a write, and every write closes an option. A copy made before anything else

Behind a write blocker the disk is imaged in full before any attempt is made to read a file from it. Awkward regions are worked in short runs and left until everything easier is safely down, because an old mechanism has a limited number of hours in it and they are spent on the copy rather than on browsing. At no point does anything get written to the drive you posted.

A single read across an ageing surface

Where the mechanism has failed outright, a donor is matched on family, model and firmware revision and fitted only to survive the read. A spindle that will not turn may be freed off; a head stack may be replaced; the ROM off your own board may be moved onto a rebuilt one. Every one of those steps exists to buy a single complete pass over the platters, and the mechanism is retired when that pass ends.

Your files, lifted from the copy

With an image in hand, the file system is rebuilt on the copy and the files read out of it. Where structures are too damaged to rebuild, photographs and documents are carved out by their signatures instead, which returns the contents without the folder names. Anything that came back incomplete is named as incomplete, file by file, rather than handed over to argue with you next week.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge whatever. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have read those files on a machine of your own.

What arrives most often

  • Age is the fault more often than anything else — a Maxtor that will not start has usually not broken so much as stiffened. Lubricant settles, a spindle resists, heads sit down on a surface. None of that harms what is written underneath, and none of it improves by trying the power again.
  • A discontinued line means a finite parts pool — every donor mechanism that will ever exist already exists. Matching one on family, model and firmware revision takes time, and it is the reason a job here gets one prepared attempt rather than a series of hopeful ones.
  • The initialise prompt is the real danger — where the BIOS lists a Maxtor and Windows offers to initialise it, the disk is present and its file system is not readable. Accepting writes fresh empty structures over the reference to your files. Decline it, and unplug the drive.
  • An external is two devices in one case — the OneTouch, Basics and Personal Storage units put a bridge board between the port and a plain PATA disk inside, and from outside a bridge that has given up is indistinguishable from a disk that has. Send the enclosure whole with its adaptor, say which socket it was plugged into, and the two get separated at this end before anything is opened.

The things that decide a Maxtor job: how much of the surface still reads; whether the mechanism turns at all; whether a donor of that family can be found; how often it has been powered up since it stopped working; and whether anybody has already opened it. Switch a Maxtor off at the first odd noise and post it, and the options stay as wide as they get. Leave it running, or feed it through recovery software over a weekend, and they narrow a long way — although what is readable is still described to you while nothing is yet owed. Storage is the only thing recovered in this laboratory, so no phones and no tablets. One disk costs £300 + VAT, written down when the free look ends, and on most jobs nothing is invoiced unless your data has genuinely come back.

A halted rebuild, and a SQL database that refused to attach

Batch and QA records at a Croydon food manufacturer sat on a six-bay server, which had quietly been running one member short since the summer. Amber came up on a second carrier, a replacement disk was fitted, and the rebuild started — then stopped half-way through. Offline went the virtual disk, and at the next restart the job database announced itself SUSPECT. The chassis was unplugged that afternoon, and each drive got here with its bay number still written on the carrier. Both weak members were imaged ahead of the others, one of them needing four passes; the remainder read cleanly from one end to the other. What the controller itself recorded about the set was read out of the images, the volume assembled over them, with the .mdf and .ldf lifted off as copies. Each database attached, and each was tested here before a single thing went home.

My Maxtor is twenty years old. Is anything still on it?

Usually, yes. Magnetic recording does not fade the way people expect, and a disk that has sat in a cupboard since the Seagate takeover in 2006 will generally still be holding what was written to it. The risk is not the recording. It is the spinning up: lubricant settles, bearings stiffen and heads can rest against a surface they were never meant to touch. So the first power-up after years of standing still is the most dangerous minute in the disk's life. Send it before that minute, not after it, and let a bench take the first read on equipment built for the job.

Maxtor is discontinued. Can donor parts still be found?

They can, but they are finite and that changes how a job is run. Nobody has manufactured a Maxtor mechanism since Seagate absorbed the company, so any head stack or board has to be lifted out of another drive that already exists, matched on family, model and firmware revision. Donor stock for the DiamondMax and MaXLine families is held here and added to whenever a suitable drive turns up. It also means the disk gets one careful read rather than several hopeful ones, because the parts standing behind a second attempt may not exist.

Should I send the whole external, or just the disk?

Send a OneTouch, a Basics or a Personal Storage unit exactly as it stands, power supply included. An external of that age is two devices in one case: a bridge board turning USB or FireWire into PATA, and a disk behind it. Either can fail, and the two need telling apart before anything is opened. An internal DiamondMax or MaXLine is different — unfasten it from the machine and post the bare drive, with the jumper left exactly where you found it.

What is the price, and how soon are the files back?

A single disk sits at £300 + VAT, a band printed on this page rather than saved for the telephone. The look itself is free. What follows is one figure on paper, and it holds: nothing chargeable begins until you have accepted it, and where a job recovers nothing, most carry no fee. A donor job runs longer than a clean read, since the matching drive must be found first, and which sort yours is gets settled before anything is agreed.

Nothing gets worse while the power is off.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive switched off.
