A Model This Bench Has Opened Before.

It reached us already out of the iMac, which is the right order to do things in: a repair centre had lifted the drive out and passed it on. The model was on the label — a Seagate Barracuda 3TB, ST3000DM001 — and the symptom ran to one line. It was making a clicking noise. Everything else in the message was about the photographs. They were the family's pictures, they were the whole reason for the enquiry, and there was no second copy of them anywhere. He asked to be dealt with by email rather than by telephone.

What failed, and why.

There is nothing unusual about this one, and that is the useful part. A drive that clicks has heads unable to find the marks telling them where they are above the surface, so it tries, fails, resets and tries again. On this particular Barracuda the pattern is familiar to the point of routine. The model has a long and well-documented history of failing, enough have been through here for the donor question to be settled before the parcel arrives, and the repair is ordinary work under clean air. What is never routine is the platter underneath. Each click sends heads that are not reading across the surface the photographs are written on.

A known model shortens the guessing

It was not switched on so that we could hear the noise for ourselves. It went onto a current-limited supply with the draw watched, which showed a mechanism reaching speed and then getting nowhere at all, and the model number did the rest of the work. A donor of the same family and firmware revision was already on the shelf, so nothing waited on sourcing.

Clean air, matched parts, alignment set

Under laminar flow the stack came away and every slider went beneath the microscope. The heads had failed. The surfaces had not, and carried no scoring anywhere along them. A donor assembly matched to this model went in with its alignment set on the bench, and with power restored the drive completed its start-up and reported itself correctly.

Photographs first, and the rest afterwards

The photographs were what the job existed for, so the imaging was ordered around them. The regions holding the picture folders were read at full rate first, and the remainder of the disk followed once those were secure. Whatever hesitated was noted and left for short passes at the close. The drive stayed powered from the beginning of the copy to the end of it, because a repaired mechanism gives its best on the first run after the work and not later.

What went home.

Every photograph was opened and looked at before anything was reported, because a picture that will not open is not a picture returned, whatever the totals say. They went home on fresh media with the rest of the disk alongside them. The Barracuda itself stayed here. A drive wearing a donor stack is a step in a recovery rather than something to keep.

The short of it:Clicking is a head fault, and no lead, port or machine alters it. Where a model is known for it the repair is ordinary — but only while the surfaces are still unmarked, and every switch-on after the noise begins works against that. Leave it off and send it in. Assessment costs nothing and one disk is £300 + VAT.
