The Light Was On. The Disk Was Never the Problem.
The drive was no longer being recognised by my mac
, and to look at, there was nothing wrong with it whatever: it sat there connected and the blue light is on

What failed, and why.
An external drive is two products in one shell, with very different life expectancies. The disk is an ordinary SATA mechanism, the same part fitted inside any desktop. In front of it sits a small board converting SATA to USB, built down to a price and given no cooling to speak of. That board is the part which fails first, and when it does the symptoms are exactly these: power arrives, the light comes on, and no computer is ever told there is storage present. Which is why the order of suspicion runs bridge, then firmware, then the mechanism — and why a broken platter, the explanation people reach for on their own, belongs at the bottom of that list rather than the top.

What the bench did with it.
The disk out, and onto a bench port
The case was opened and the disk went straight onto a bench SATA port, away from the bridge altogether. It spun up. It gave its full model string, declared its correct capacity and took vendor commands without hesitating. That is a working drive by every measure available, and it settled the large question in under a minute.
Read the logs before ringing him
A disk can look healthy and still be on its quiet way out, so nobody telephoned him until two numbers had been read: the reallocated sector count, and the length of the grown defect list. Neither held anything a disk of that age should not have. Samples taken in every zone answered at the first attempt, with not one retry logged — which separates a healthy disk from a merely willing one.
A full-speed copy, and a verdict
The copy ran at the drive's rated speed, start to finish, with nothing coaxed out of it, no retries and no new defects logged. That left a single part to answer for it. The bridge board had failed, while the disk it was wrapped around carried on working perfectly well.
What went home.
His music software went onto the SSD he had bought, opened and tried here before it went anywhere. The Samsung disk went back to him too. Nothing was wrong with it in the first place and nothing about the recovery has changed that — but the enclosure it had been living in is what failed, and that did not go back with it.
