Three Sounds in a Row, Then Nothing.

He gave us the sequence rather than a diagnosis, which is a good deal more useful. The Seagate started beeping then stopped beeping and started to sound like the disk was spinning again but with some clicking sounds, and having worked its way through all of that it does not get detected with a MAC or PC. He was straight about what was riding on it as well, calling the contents not super important but more inconvenient. The best thing he did was the thing he did not do: once the noises started he stopped plugging it in.

What failed, and why.

Take those three sounds in the order he heard them and they describe a single mechanism in trouble. A beep is a motor loading up against something that will not turn, the protection dropping the supply, and the cycle starting over. That it then sounded like spinning says the motor had the better of it, at least in part. The clicking after that belongs to the heads: they sweep across, hunt for the positioning marks written among the data, find none, reset and go again. None of it is the computer's doing. A drive cannot introduce itself until it has read its own reserved tables off the platters — model string, capacity and defect lists all live there and in no other place — so a mechanism stuck at any of these stages has no truthful account of itself to give.

The noises had already ruled out the easy answers

It was not plugged in again to see whether it would behave itself. It went onto a current-limited supply with a meter across it, and the draw told the same story his ears had told him: a long draw while the motor worked at a pack that would not free itself, protection cutting the rail, a pause, then the identical thing over again. Where it did come up to speed, the current settled and the head activity began and got nowhere. Both ends of the mechanism, then.

Clean air first, and a look at both ends of it

Under laminar flow the spindle and the head stack were each examined at magnification, since the sounds pointed at both and either one will mask the other. The platters were the part that decided the job, and they carried no marking at all — good fortune, and never a thing to assume in advance. Matched donor parts went in. Power came back on, the drive worked through its start-up sequence, named itself and held.

One session, from first sector to last

A mechanism just repaired is at its most willing on the opening run, so the copy was made in one sitting rather than in stages. It was not switched off between passes and nothing was retried on a whim. The image verified, the drive went back into its box, and every step after that ran against the copy.

What went home.

Fresh media carried it home, and the files were opened and looked at here first, which is the only check that settles anything. He had called the contents inconvenient rather than critical, and inconvenient is where they stayed — largely because he stopped switching the thing on once the noises began.

The short of it:Beeping, then spinning, then clicking is a mechanism in trouble at more than one point. Every further switch-on sweeps failing heads over the surfaces again. Switch it off and let it come here. Looking is not charged for. One disk: the published £300 + VAT. On most jobs, an empty-handed attempt is never invoiced.
