Every Way In Ended at the Same Blue Screen.
The film she was watching stopped, and the picture was frozen
where it had halted. She held the power button in and started the machine again. A grey screen came up; the cut-down start-up Windows keeps for occasions like this one got further along and then finished with the blue screen
. After that every route led to the same place. The repair choice and an ordinary start were tried in turn, and the whole sequence went round several times over. Each turn of it asked a disk that had already refused once to read and write a little more.

What failed, and why.
A machine that freezes and then cannot start again is putting two possibilities in front of you at once, and they want separating before anything else happens. Either the file system was made inconsistent when the power was cut mid-film, which is common and repairable, or the disk beneath it has begun to fail and the freeze was the first sign of that. From the outside the two produce the same blue screen. What tells them apart is measurement, and measurement is the one thing a restart cannot do. Meanwhile the loop is not neutral. Every ordinary start, every cut-down start and every repair choice Windows offers writes to the disk while it works, and a repair tool handed a failing disk spends reads on ground that has very few of them to spare. The sequence feels like progress because something is happening. What is happening is that the thing you are trying to keep is being used up.

Take the disk out before it is asked again
The laptop was set aside unopened and the disk lifted out of it, because everything the machine could still be asked to do had already been asked of it several times. On the bench it answered, which settled the first question: this was not a disk that had stopped. What it would not do was answer at a steady rate, and that put the second question in front of a measurement rather than another restart.
Measure it, then copy it once
Health came first and shaped everything after it. The service area answered, the defect log was read out, and the picture was of a disk carrying wear rather than one in good order that had merely been interrupted. That set the copying policy: a short fixed allowance on every read, nothing retried twice, and difficult ranges noted and put by for a gentler pass later. One copy, made once, and the disk not asked to start an operating system a second time.
Everything after that ran on the copy
No repair tool was run against the disk itself. The NTFS records were lifted out of the finished copy, the inconsistency the freeze had produced was identified there, and the file tree was put back together from whatever those records still held. Files were then opened and read rather than counted, because a name and a length prove nothing about what is in one.
What went home.
The user folders went back on fresh media under their own names, in the order she had kept them. What the freeze had damaged was the description of the volume rather than the files that description points at, and with the structure rebuilt off the copy the documents and pictures opened when they were opened here. Nothing was called recovered on the strength of a listing. Whether the laptop itself is worth repairing is now a separate question, and one she can take at her own pace. Pricing came from the published bands — one disk, £300 + VAT — and she saw that number in writing ahead of any chargeable step.
