It Powers Up, and Windows Offers to Format It.
The drive did one job and did it about once a year: a copy of the laptop, then back into storage. He connected it as usual and Windows would not open it. D:/ is not accessible, the parameter is incorrect

. The drive powers up and sounds entirely ordinary; the files simply do not appear. Declining that prompt is the most useful thing anybody does in this situation, and he had already done it before he rang.

What failed, and why.
That message is Windows saying it cannot make sense of the structure describing the volume. It is not a statement about the files, and the offer to format is not advice — it is what Windows proposes when it has no structure it can read, and accepting it lays an empty one over the thing a recovery needs. Two ordinary histories produce it. A write that never finished during one of those yearly copies leaves the structure inconsistent until something next tries to read it. A disk left unpowered for years can also come back with weak areas, one of which may sit exactly where the structure lives. Either fits a drive used once a year, which is why its health was established before any file work began: corruption sometimes travels with a developing hardware fault. A lone drive carries the published £300 + VAT, and the diagnosis ahead of it is not charged for.

What the bench did with it.
Rule out the hardware before touching the file system
A drive stored for years and used briefly can be failing quietly, so its own reports came first: SMART history, the reallocated sector count, and the primary and grown defect lists. All of it came back unremarkable. That matters to the method as much as to the price, because a sound mechanism can be copied at full rate instead of nursed along on salvage settings.
Image it, then argue with the file system
Everything after the copy happened on the copy. A repair tool pointed at a damaged volume writes to that volume, and there is no way back from it, so the original was read once behind a write blocker and then set aside for good. Seen from the image, the damage sat in the structures themselves and nowhere near the file data they refer to.
Names first, then the files nothing named
Most of the tree came back with its own names and dates once the surviving records were reassembled. What the damaged section had carried away was reached another way: files identified by their own signatures, then grouped by type and ordered on the dates written into them. That is a smaller pile to sort than it sounds, and a great deal better than a listing that says nothing at all.
What went home.
The yearly copies went back in full, opened and checked here before they went out. The one thing worth repeating is what he did before he rang: he read the offer to format, and refused it. A drive reporting itself unreadable is still holding everything it held, right up until something writes over it. The figure was in writing at the published £300 + VAT before any of the work began.
