Attached, and the Machine Would Not Start.
It went in stages and he watched every one of them. First the drive started clicking and beeping

, and by that stage the machine was suffering for it too — he had to disconnect the drive simply to boot the PC up

What failed, and why.
Why should an old drive hold up a whole computer? Because storage requests are served in order. A disk that cannot answer leaves its request outstanding: the machine sits through one timeout, tries once more, sits through a second, and everything queued behind waits with it — including what has to be answered before the machine will start. Unplug it and the queue clears, which is what he found. The noise tells the rest. Clicking is a head that cannot find its reference, going back to the stop to retry. Beeping is a motor asked for a rotation it cannot give. Slowing until nothing opens is those two failing more often than they succeed. None of it is a connection problem, so no adapter cures it, and each attempt is one more pass of damaged heads over the files.

What the bench did with it.
Stop, before anything else
The most useful thing done on this job was done by him, when he stopped trying. A drive already clicking and beeping has a limited number of passes left in it, and every attempt to open a folder through an adapter spends several of them over the same tracks. Power was taken off it. The drive was then measured on a current-limited supply with its draw watched, so what the mechanism was doing could be established without asking it to read a thing.
Open it in filtered air and grade what is there
Under laminar flow the heads and the spindle were inspected beneath the microscope, which is the only way that question gets a real answer. A matched donor head assembly went in, and then — before any copying — the surfaces were graded head by head, because heads that have been flying over a fault for weeks leave a record of it behind them. What the grading found decided the order of everything that followed.
One copy, then check by opening
With the drive reading again, the copy was taken once, at a fixed number of attempts per address, sound regions first and the marked ones last. Nothing was signed off on a file count. The folder structure was rebuilt from the finished copy and the files were opened at this bench, since a file of the correct size can still hold a stretch the surface never gave back.
What went home.
His important files travelled home on new media, every one of them opened here first. Not all of them survived those weeks of clicking; the ones that did not are itemised in the report, and no percentage is quoted anywhere in it. The old disk did not go back into service. What it had already spent could not be put back into it.
