One Encouraging Sign, and It Was Not the Data.

An Apple shop had already given him the diagnosis, and it was a Hard drive failure. The machine isn't starting. He had not got any backup of the files on the machine, and he wanted to know what the one hopeful thing he had noticed was actually worth: The recovery mode is working. His questions were the practical ones — how long, how it reaches us, what it costs — and underneath them the one that decides the job, which is whether a Mac that can still reach recovery mode is a Mac whose files can still be reached.

What failed, and why.

Recovery mode is a small separate system the Mac can start into when the main one will not, and its loading does tell you something real: firmware answers, the machine powers, and enough of the storage can be reached to get that far. It is a better position than a Mac showing nothing at all. What it is not is a statement about the files. Those live on the storage the shop had already named as failed, and a failing device can be readable enough to hand over a maintenance system and unreadable when asked for a folder of photographs. So the encouraging sign and the diagnosis are both true, and neither cancels the other out. What settles the job is the condition of the storage itself, measured rather than assumed — and on an Apple machine there is a second question behind that one, which is whether what sits on the storage is protected in a way that puts the key, rather than the reading, at the centre of the work.

Recovery mode says the machine lives, not the files

The first job was to separate the two claims he arrived with. Recovery mode loading proves the Mac can start something. The shop's diagnosis says the storage holding his files has a fault. Both can be true at once, and usually are. So nothing was concluded from the hopeful sign, and the machine was not started again to enjoy it. The storage came out from behind the recovery system and was put in front of equipment that measures rather than boots, which is where a diagnosis of failure turns into a figure.

Measure the storage, then copy what reads

A failure named by a shop is a symptom with a label on it, not a reading. Health was profiled first, and the copying that followed drew its policy from that: a fixed limit on retries, difficult ranges put by for a later and gentler pass, and the copy built up steadily rather than pursued. Nothing at all was repaired on the storage itself.

The encryption question, answered honestly

On an Apple machine the reading is only half of it. What comes off the storage can be protected by the machine's own security, and where it is, the route to the files runs through the key rather than through better equipment. That was established alongside the copy and said plainly at the point where it mattered, rather than at the end. The volume then opened off the copy, and the files came out under their own names and dates.

What went home.

He got the files he had no other copy of, off a copy rather than off the machine, and without the MacBook being asked to start even once more. The three practical questions were answered before any of it: what it costs, how it travels here, and how long work of this kind runs. The storage was not repaired, because repairing it was never the point — the point was reading it once, carefully, while it could still be read. The price was the published single-drive figure, £300 + VAT, put in writing before any chargeable step.

The short of it:Recovery mode loading is a good sign about the machine and none at all about the files. The storage was what got diagnosed, and the storage is what has to be read. Do not run the disk repair tool from in there on a failing device, and stop restarting. The look itself is not charged for. One drive by itself comes to £300 + VAT, and on most work an unsuccessful attempt goes unbilled.
