One Piece of Advice Kept It Readable.
It had stopped working a few days ago
, and what she described after that is what decided the job. The drive itself was still there. She could access the hard drive

What failed, and why.
That message is a short way of saying the drive could not fetch what was asked of it. About the reason it says nothing whatever. Two unrelated situations wear the identical wording: an index that has lost track of itself on hardware in perfect order, and a surface no longer able to hand back what was put on it. Only the second punishes a guess. Windows will offer to check the disk, and checking means reading hard across every part of it and writing corrections along the way — hours of the heaviest work a struggling drive will ever be asked to do, aimed squarely at the ground least able to bear it. Drives go from awkward to silent in a single overnight session of that. She had been told to leave it alone, and she left it alone.

What the bench did with it.
Find out how it reads before asking it for anything
Nothing was scanned and nothing was repaired. The drive was measured instead: the speed of its answers, the places it slowed, the sectors that had already stopped returning data, and what its own stored health figures said about how fast that was spreading. What comes out of that is a picture of how much reading the drive still has in it, and that is what sets how hard the imaging may push.
A ceiling on retries, because retries cost the drive
Limits were settled before a single sector moved. Timeouts were kept short, attempts were capped, and ground that pushed back was written down, stepped past and left where it lay. Each skipped area got one brief run at the close, after the easy reading was finished. This is a budget rather than a contest: an hour on one sector that will not read is an hour the drive may not have.
Read it once, then leave the drive alone
The Seagate was switched off the moment its copy verified, and it stayed off. Everything from there ran against that copy: the file system was opened there, the folders walked there, and what came out was opened and looked at rather than counted. A listing only proves that a name survived. Opening the file is what proves the file did. Whatever could not be read gathered into a small number of areas, and the filenames within them are set out in the report.
What went home.
The great part of that terabyte went home on fresh media under its own folder names, and the report names what did not, one file at a time, so she is not left guessing which of it to go hunting for elsewhere. The rest of this write-up belongs to the advice she was given. A drive answering with a read error on every file has only so many reads remaining, and almost none of hers had been spent by the time it reached the bench. The charge was the published band for one disk, £300 + VAT, and she had it in writing beforehand.
