Nothing Touched It, and It Stopped Answering Anyway.

The card had led an undisturbed life, which turned out to be the useful fact in the whole enquiry. She kept it in one device and did not usually remove it; she could recall no physical damage to the card; and then one day it simply stopped being recognised. She tried three more devices, four in all, and not one of them would see it. The photographs on it had no second copy anywhere.

What failed, and why.

Where a card fails tells you a good deal about why. This one was sitting still, in one device, with nothing pressing on it and no contact wear, so the two ordinary physical explanations were gone before anything was opened. That leaves the two internal ones. Either the controller has failed, or the memory has reached the end of what can be written to it. Writing is what uses flash up, while reading takes nothing from it, which is why a card will often refuse new material some while before it refuses to hand the old material back. Four devices seeing nothing at all points at the controller rather than a damaged file system, since a file-system problem still lets a computer notice the card is there. A silent controller says nothing whatever about the photographs behind it.

Find out which half of the card had stopped

A reader produced nothing at all, so the casing was taken off and probes went onto the board. Addressed directly, the memory replied at once, and its part number was already in the library here. The controller alongside it stayed silent through every attempt. That is the whole diagnosis: the storage is present and answering, and the thing whose job is to hand it over is not.

Take the pages off first, sort them out after

What comes off a memory die looks nothing like a disk image. Every page still carries its error-correction bytes, a mask of the controller's own devising sits over the lot, and page order is whatever a translation layer decided while it was alive. Three operations have to be right: the errors corrected, the mask lifted, the order restored. Get all three and files appear. Any one of them wrong and the result is noise that looks a great deal like progress.

Rebuild the volume, then open the lot

With the order restored, the FAT tables came out cleanly and the folders appeared under her own naming. Every item was then opened and drawn on screen. Counting files proves very little on a job of this kind, because a photograph which refuses to open has not returned, whatever a file list says about it.

What went home.

What the memory gave up went home on fresh media, checked item by item first, and the report sets out what the read reached and what it did not. A card is no place for the only copy of anything, which is the lesson this fault teaches every time it turns up.

The short of it:A card that has stopped answering will not be talked round by another reader or another slot, and each attempt is a chance for something to offer a format. Leave it out. Looking costs nothing. A card or a memory stick falls in the £250 + VAT band, and that figure is settled in writing before anything begins.
