One Word From the Phone, Then Nothing at All.
It gave her a word and then it gave her nothing. The microSD had become 'corrupted' for some reason
, which is the message a phone puts up when it can no longer make sense of a card, and after that the story got worse rather than better: in her laptop it doesn't recognise it's existence

What failed, and why.
Those two symptoms sit at different depths, and the second one decides the route. A phone reporting corruption has reached the card, had a conversation with it, and failed to make sense of the structure it was handed — annoying, but shallow, and usually answered by reading round the damaged structure. A computer that will not acknowledge a card at all has not had a conversation. That puts the trouble below the file system, in the part whose only job is to have conversations, and once that has stopped no software anywhere restarts it. The memory it spoke for is a separate component and keeps what was written to it regardless. A card of any kind is £250 + VAT on the published bands, and looking at one costs nothing.

Give the front end its chance first
A card that has stopped answering is worth an hour before anything permanent is done to it, because some of them are merely slow, and some have a broken joint at the contacts that an iron will put right. This one was put on a monitored bench, where draw and responses are read side by side. It drew what a card of its kind should draw. It answered nothing, on any command, at any speed, which was the laptop's experience exactly.
Lift the memory away from the part that failed
The package was warmed until it released, lifted whole, and its pads dressed until it would seat properly in a socket adapter. Nothing about that step is dramatic and everything about it is about temperature: enough heat to free the joints, never enough to trouble the silicon or what is held in it.
Order first, photographs afterwards
A raw read is not a file and does not resemble one. Correction codes were applied, the mask undone, and pages and blocks put back where the controller had once been keeping them, until the arrangement it used to present was there again. A file system then mounted on top of that, with her folders in it.
What went home.
The photographs went home on new media, and she was told plainly which of them came back damaged rather than being handed a percentage to interpret. She had done the two things that mattered without being asked: she declined the offer to format, and she stopped putting the card back in the phone. A card is £250 + VAT under the published bands.
