Two Refusals, and Not the Same Refusal.
His video was on a SanDisk SD card, and the two devices that had already turned it away had between them said more than either of them knew. In the camera, the card cannot be accessed

. Those are two different answers. One device found a card and could make nothing of what was written on it. The other saw nothing there to find. Put side by side they place the fault in the card rather than in either machine, and they give a rough measure of how far down it sits, which is a good deal more than most enquiries arrive carrying.

What failed, and why.
A card is two things in one piece of plastic. There is the memory, which holds what was written to it and goes on holding it long after everything around it has stopped working, and there is a small controller whose entire job is to speak for that memory when a camera or a computer asks. Once you know that, his two devices stop disagreeing. The camera reached the card, got an answer of some sort, and could not make sense of the structure it found. The Mac got no answer at all. That pattern points past the file system to the part that does the talking, and it is the reason a second reader, a different lead or another computer would each have produced the same nothing. What none of it touches is the video. Memory cards and sticks carry a published price of £250 + VAT, and the first look is free of charge.

Ask the front end before touching the memory
Nothing began at a card reader on a desk. The card went onto a monitored bench, where the current it draws and the answers it gives can both be watched, and where a controller that is merely slow can be told apart from one that has stopped speaking. It drew about what it should have drawn. What it would not do was answer, on any command, at any speed, which is precisely the experience his MacBook had already had.
Past the front end, on to the memory
Once a controller has gone quiet there is no persuading it, and no reason to try. The memory was identified from the chip library, read directly, and everything it held was read out in the order that particular device had been keeping — which is not an order any file system would recognise. A controller that has failed takes nothing with it. Whatever was written stays written, and the work becomes a question of reading it back correctly.
The order has to be rebuilt before files exist
A raw read of memory arrives deliberately out of order: correction codes over the top, a mask applied, and pages scattered wherever there was room at the moment of writing. All of that was undone in turn until the arrangement the controller had once presented was back. Only then did a file system appear on it, with the folders where the camera had put them and the video in them.
What went home.
The clips were played through before anything was called recovered, and they went home on new media. He had done the single most useful thing available to him without knowing it: he tried the card twice, in two devices, and then stopped rather than working through every reader and adapter in the house. The published figure for a card is £250 + VAT, and he saw it before anybody started.
