Seven Years of Care, and It Still Would Not Start.

What failed, and why.
This message is narrower than it may seem. It indicates that the machine attempted to find something to run from, but could not find it. However, the message states absolutely nothing regarding how the laptop has been maintained. A disk degrades internally, independent of how it has been treated. Seven years of careful treatment will not protect the portions of the disk that degrade. There is a second part of what she was told which should be separated as well. Finished, from a repair bench, typically means that it cannot get a computer started, which is a different statement from saying that the data is lost. Many disks that cannot get a computer running can deliver their content intact when their contents are accessed directly (i.e., through reading) instead of attempting to boot. She required the latter, and the latter does not need the Acer to work again.

The laptop was never asked to start up again here
There was no advantage to making another attempt at the message, therefore none was made. The disk was taken out and placed into bench equipment where it can be read without a machine trying to boot from it. Most of the task in cases such as this is the difference between asking a disk to boot and asking a disk to read. A disk nearing the end of its useful life can often continue to respond to the latter request.
Measure it before deciding what it is worth
Condition came first, as a verdict is not a measurement. The defect log was read out and the surfaces were checked for the read rate they could hold, which produced a picture of normal degradation instead of a dead disk. It also set the copy policy, which on a disk of that age meant allowing a fixed number of attempts per read and not attempting anything twice.
Boot structures are the smallest part of a disk
What stops a laptop starting occupies only a small area of a disk, so damage there leaves the remaining area of the disk unharmed. The copy was completed before anything was examined, and the file tree was created from the surviving records. Rather than count them, her documents and photographs were viewed here.
What went home.
The files were transferred to new media for the new machine (which is all she asked for). The old disk was not repaired and did not need to be. Whether or not the Acer ever starts again is now something she does not have to have an opinion about. Pricing followed the published band for a standalone drive, £300 + VAT, and the price was sent to her prior to commencing any chargeable step.
