Seven Years of Care, and It Still Would Not Start.

What failed, and why.
That message is narrower than it sounds. It means the machine looked for something to start from and did not find it, and it says nothing whatever about how the laptop has been treated. A disk wears from within, on its own schedule, and seven years of careful handling does not reach the parts that wear. The other half of what she had been told is worth separating too. Finished, from a repair bench, generally means it will not start a computer — which is a different claim from the data having gone. Disks that will not start a machine hand over their contents perfectly often, once they are read directly rather than asked to boot. The second of those was what she wanted, and the second of those does not need the Acer to work again.

What the bench did with it.
The laptop was never asked to start up again here
Nothing was to be gained from another attempt at the message, so there was not one. The disk was lifted out and put onto bench hardware, where it can be read without a machine trying to boot from it. That distinction is most of the job in a case like this: booting is a demand, reading is a request, and a disk near the end of its working life can often still answer the second.
Measure it before deciding what it is worth
Condition came first, because a verdict is not a measurement. The defect log came out, and the surfaces were checked for the rate they could hold, which produced a picture of ordinary wear rather than of a disk that had stopped. It also set the copying policy, which on a disk of that age means a fixed allowance per read and nothing pursued twice.
Boot structures are the smallest part of a disk
What stops a laptop starting occupies a very small region compared with the rest of a disk, and damage there leaves everything else untouched. The copy was complete before any of it was looked at, and the file tree was rebuilt from the records that survived. Her documents and photographs were opened here rather than counted.
What went home.
The files went onto fresh media for the new machine, which is what she asked for and all she asked for. The old disk was not repaired and did not need to be; whether the Acer ever starts again is a question she no longer has to hold an opinion about. Charging followed the published band for a drive by itself, £300 + VAT, and the number reached her before any chargeable step.
