The Light Used to Come On. Now Nothing Does.

For four years the Toshiba had greeted him with a light whenever it was plugged in, and then it stopped. What he reported was no power being able to feed into the device: the blue light that would illuminate no longer lights up. Nothing else had happened to it, by his account, and there had been no warning. He was not asking for a repair. He wanted the contents moved onto a new drive and the old one done with. Whether the break sat in the supply, in the case or on the drive's own board was the question that had to be settled first.

What failed, and why.

A light that used to come on and now does not is a statement about power, and only about power. Either it is not arriving or it is not getting through, and there are three places it can stop: the plug and lead, the small bridge board inside the case, or the drive's own electronics. All three sit in front of the platters, which is why this class of job so often comes back whole. A power fault does not touch the recording surfaces, it simply stops anything reaching them. Which of the three it is decides the work and nothing else does. If it is the lead or the bridge, the disk is reached directly and that is most of the job. If it is the drive's own board, that is component-level work on the board. Establishing which costs nothing, and it is done before a price is quoted.

Follow the power, one stage at a time

Case, lead and bridge board went onto a current-monitored supply under magnification, and each stage was asked the same question: does anything get past you. That is a slow way to work and a cheap one, because it stops at the first stage that answers no. Guessing at this fault is how people replace a working part and still end up with a dark drive.

Reach the disk without the case

Out of the enclosure and onto bench hardware, the disk answered, which separates two faults that look identical from outside. A drive that will not spin because its own board has gone, and one that never received power at all, present the same dark box to an owner, and only one needs work on the drive. Here the disk was sound, and had been sitting behind a fault in the supply.

Copy first, and read from the copy

Once it had a steady supply the drive behaved like a drive: the defect tables answered straight away, and the image held a steady rate from one end to the other. Reading was done from the copy afterwards rather than from the original, and every item was opened rather than listed. This is how electrical jobs usually behave. The damage stops at the electronics.

What went home.

The contents went onto the new drive he had asked for, checked item by item first, and the old enclosure was not wanted again. Pricing was the published single-drive band, £300 + VAT, and it reached him in writing before a component was touched. What had failed was the delivery of power. What held the data had never been reached by it.

The short of it:A drive that used to light up and now shows nothing has a power fault, and the platters sit behind it rather than in it. Trying another lead once is sensible; trying six is not. Buy nothing and change nothing, and send it as it stands, with the supply if there is one. Nothing is charged for looking. A single drive sits in the £300 + VAT band, and on most jobs a recovery that returns nothing is not invoiced.
