The Clicking Is the Heads. The Cover Stays On.

The instinct after that is always the same: get the cover off and look at the heads, because a clicking drive is obviously a head problem and heads are obviously something you can see. What failed, and why.
Four screws come out in about a minute, and the unscrewing is never the expensive part. The expense is what has to happen next, because the drive still has to run. That steel top is no mere cover; it is part of a seal, and under it the heads fly a couple of nanometres above platters turning at speed. Nothing looks any different once it is open. The invoice arrives later. Meanwhile the fault itself has not changed: clicking means the heads are sweeping and retrying because they cannot find their reference, and each sweep is another pass over the surfaces the files are written to. A static discharge can hurt the board too, so both are examined; the clicking is the mechanism whatever set it going.

Nothing turns until the inside is clean
The most useful thing on this job had already been done: once it started clicking, he stopped connecting it. That is not caution for its own sake. Where heads are damaged, every power-up flies them over the surfaces again, and a drive that could have been read in full becomes one that can be read in part. It arrived unpowered, and everything from then on happened on a current-limited supply with the draw watched rather than guessed at.
Then find out what the static touched
A discharge across a desk goes for the electronics, so the board was taken off and put under magnification before the mechanism was opened at all. That matters practically as well as diagnostically: where a board has been hurt, its adaptive data has to travel across to the replacement, or the mechanism bolted to it becomes unreadable. Board and mechanism were treated as two separate questions with two separate answers.
The heads, in clean air, and not before
Only inside a laminar-flow bench does the assembly get opened, and only then are heads and platters looked at properly. A matched set went in, alignment was set, and the drive was asked to read for the first time since it began clicking. Imaging ran slowly after that, on the reasonable assumption that a drive which has clicked has already spent some of what it had.
What went home.
Everything he keeps on that drive came back, and it went home on fresh media. Nothing had been unscrewed, and nothing had been run since the clicking started, which is most of the reason the job read the way it did. What he guessed was right. What he did about it was better.
