The Leads Went With It, and So Did the Power.
One knock accounts for all of it. The 3TB Seagate sat on the desk beside the machine, wired in and working, until he knocked the drive off the table and it pulled the cables out
. Since then the unit no longer has any power when plugged in and switched on
. No light, no sound, no sign of anything at the switch. What he had in front of him looked exactly like a drive that had finished, and it is worth saying early that it was not one: a desktop unit that goes over with its leads under tension puts the whole of that force through two connectors, which is a far better place to take it than the mechanism.

What failed, and why.
A desktop drive of this shape has its own supply arriving at a barrel socket on the case, and that socket is soldered to a board that is itself screwed to plastic. Nothing about that arrangement is built to be pulled sideways. When the unit leaves a desk with both leads attached, the leads stop travelling before the drive does, and everything that force can do gets done at the two points where they are held. Joints break, pads lift, and occasionally a component in the input path goes short and takes the rail down to earth deliberately, which is what it exists to do. All of that is in front of the disk. The mechanism is a sealed assembly with its own connector, and no part of the sequence reaches it. So a unit showing nothing at all after a knock is usually a better job than a unit that lights up and clicks, which is not how it feels to the person holding it.

What the bench did with it.
Follow the power from the socket inwards
The case was opened on the bench and everything was done under magnification before a supply went near it. The socket had moved on its pads and two joints had broken through. Past that point the board was unmarked, with no heat colouring, no lifted components and nothing shorting to earth. The disk itself was still wired to a connector that had never been disturbed, which is what the geometry of the accident predicts.
Reach the disk rather than repair the case
There is a decision at that point about whether to rebuild the enclosure or go round it. Rebuilding is for the person who wants the unit back; this job was about the files. The disk came out and went onto the bench through its own connector, so the damaged input was left out of the picture entirely, and it drew, answered and reported itself exactly as a healthy one should. Nothing about the accident had reached it.
One straight copy, start to finish
With the disk behaving there was no reason to be clever. It was copied in one run, first sector through to last, the rate held level throughout, and the defect list gained nothing while it ran. Everything after that was read off the copy.
What went home.
Everything went back on fresh media, checked before the parcel was closed. The enclosure was not repaired: a socket pulled sideways once tends to be pulled sideways again, and the disk is better off in something that stands on its own feet. He asked what he should have done differently, and the answer was short — leave the lead slack enough to travel. A lone drive is £300 + VAT on the published list, and he had that number before anything was opened.
