The Light Was Steady. The Mac Had Nothing.

, which is something we hear all too frequently in this trade. It is powering up and has a solid orange light on the outside
, yet it is no longer showing up in disk utility
, so there is no method of accessing even a single frame of the content. These two statements represent the entirety of the inquiry. The fact remains that some component within the enclosure is operating, and thus drawing power. However, the portion of the sequence in which the disk makes itself known to the system, i.e., a volume appears on your desktop, has not occurred; nor can anyone determine from viewing a lit indicator where along the continuum of failure this issue resides.

What failed, and why.
A status indicator on an external disk is wired to a supply rail and nothing else. It advises you that a voltage signal has arrived. It offers no assessment regarding the state of the disk behind it, i.e., if it has successfully attained speed. In addition, it cannot inform you as to whether the circuitry in front of it has ceased functioning. Thus, a constant light with an empty Disk Utility reduces the possible locations for the fault to three: the translation bridge which converts a disk into something with which a Mac will communicate, the firmware of the disk, or the mechanical components. From outside these three appear identical, yet they act dissimilarly during testing on a bench, where each draws its own shape. What settles nothing is trying another lead or having another go, and it is the second of those that ends up costing you.

What the bench did with it.
Meter it before anything else happens
We disconnected the USB cable and connected a monitored supply, which reveals information that no computer can provide. The draw rose as the motor engaged and then stabilised at a point consistent with a healthy unit, and repeated this behaviour on a second start, so the mechanism was doing its part properly. This represents the useful half of the answer. A drive which spins and stabilises, yet fails to present anything to the system, contains an error above the mechanical aspects of operation. The light on the front panel had indicated none of these events.
Out of the case, asked directly
Once removed from its enclosure and made available natively, the disk could be accessed directly through native access. Native access provides a method to differentiate between a faulty bridge and a non-responsive disk. Differentiating between a faulty bridge and a non-responding disk is the reason why an enclosure is opened rather than replaced. Fitting a replacement enclosure allows you to learn nothing about which component(s) were involved. At this point the disk responded as expected immediately following direct access requests, reported its size accurately, and had a list of defects worthy of review: short but not empty, with each entry listed in the same area.
Copy it before opening anything
No folders were accessed or browsed on the disk itself. The disk was copied end-to-end in a single pass. After everything else was copied, the region noted in its defect list went last. All verification activities took place later using our own media, where retrying an errant file incurs no cost.
What went home.
The project returned. It was reviewed by opening individual files/clips versus reviewing count totals. He now has it loaded on two separate units and notes as to which is which. The LaCie housing device failed to translate correctly. It will not be used again for his materials. One drive is charged at £300 + VAT in accordance with our published pricing band levels. He received this price via written correspondence first.
