It Turns, It Lights, and the Mac Offers to Erase It.
The drive was only a few months old, which is the part that threw her. Plug it in and the Mac put up its refusal: The Disk you inserted
, it said, was not readable by this computer
— then offered, helpfully, to initialise it. All the while it was still lighting up
and she could hear the disk spinning
, so nothing about it felt broken. She did the sensible things before ringing anybody: a different computer, then a new lead. Neither changed a word of the message. What she did not do was press the button the Mac kept putting in front of her, and that is why there is anything to write up here at all.

What failed, and why.
That message is about a structure, not about a disk. A Mac reads a volume header, then a catalogue saying where everything lives; if either will not parse it declares the disk unreadable and offers the one remedy it knows, which is to write a fresh empty structure over the top. The disk beneath is never consulted. Everything she saw pointed the same way. It lit, it turned, it did not click, and it behaved the same on a second machine and a second lead — so the hardware was doing its job and the fault lay in what had been written. On a drive a few months old that is the likelier answer anyway: young mechanisms rarely wear out, while a write interrupted by an unplug or a power cut leaves a file system inconsistent on any drive of any age.

What the bench did with it.
Prove the disk before the data
A sound mechanism was what everybody had assumed, so it was tested first rather than last. Reallocated and pending counts were near zero, the defect list held nothing new, vendor commands were answered without hesitation, and test reads in every zone returned at the first attempt. Nothing in it was failing. The damage was in what had been written to it.
Take the copy before repairing anything
No repair whatever was attempted on the drive itself. It was copied whole, behind a write blocker, with the volume header and catalogue areas put at the head of the queue so the small parts everything else depends on were secured ahead of the bulk. Every step afterwards worked against that copy.
Rebuild the structure, then open files
On the copy the volume header was rebuilt from its backup and the catalogue repaired against it, restoring names, folders and dates for the great majority. Anything the repaired structure no longer referenced was carved out by file signature and handed over in a folder of its own, unnamed but intact. Then files were opened — not listed, opened — because a directory entry proves nothing about the file behind it.
What went home.
She had it back inside the week on new media, the tree standing as she had built it, with a second folder holding the files whose names the repair could not restore. Nothing on the original was written to or formatted at any stage. The one honest caveat sits in the report's first paragraph rather than its last: a file system that fails part way through a write can take the newest entries with it, and the most recent few were among those carved back without their names.
