The Login Was the Symptom. The Noise Was the Fault.

Eight months went by without anybody needing it, and when she went back to the WD network drive it had stopped letting me log in. The box said it is offline. It also made strange noises every time it boots up, which is the part that mattered, though it came last in the account. Rather than pay the maker's prices she had already tried a USB to sata 2 adapter: the disk showed up on her Mac, and the Mac reported that it isn't able to read the disk. Both of those results have ordinary explanations, and only one of them is about the data.

What failed, and why.

Two symptoms arrived together and only one of them is worth much. A box that will not take a login and calls itself offline could be any number of software things. A disk making a noise it never used to make is nearly always the mechanism, and that one fact outranks the rest: a drive whose heads cannot work over its platters has nothing to offer a network, so the login screen and the offline status are both downstream of it. It also means every start-up since has been a risk rather than a test. The adapter result is a separate matter and no diagnosis at all, since a network box keeps its data on Linux volumes, and even a healthy disk out of one reads as unreadable on a Mac. Prices open at £500 + VAT for NAS and RAID, and placing a job costs nothing.

Take the disk out of the box first

The first job was to stop it starting. Out of the case, on a current-monitored supply, the disk named itself and the noise repeated: the same sound, at the same point in the start-up, every time. That is the profile of a mechanism, not of a login. From outside the box none of it is visible, because all the little Linux board can report is that its storage no longer answers. Shares, dashboard and status therefore went at the same moment.

Mechanism first, and only then the reading

Heads and platters were inspected under magnification before any surface was read, and the donor parts that had to be matched were matched. Only after that does imaging make sense. Every start-up the box had made since the noise began flew tired heads across those surfaces, so the copy was taken with timeouts held short and the awkward ground left to a closing pass. Nothing inside a network box prevents any of this. Left alone, it powers the disk until the disk stops answering.

The volume underneath is Linux, not Windows

What a network box writes to its disk is a stack of Linux volumes, which is exactly why a Windows utility looking for NTFS has nothing to work with, and why the adapter told her what it did. Unpicked in the right order, the image came out as a folder tree under its own names, rather than as a numbered heap with the filing gone.

What went home.

The contents went home on fresh media, with anything the read could not reach set down by name in the report instead of lumped into a total. The bare disk went back into its own case. What she took away is the lesson worth taking from this fault: the noise was the warning, and everything the box itself reported came afterwards. Return postage is paid on every job.

The short of it:No enclosure looks after a failing disk for you. It powers the thing until the thing stops replying, and the network side is the last part of it to admit anything is wrong. Switch it off on the day the sound changes, not a fortnight later. An adapter will not settle the question either, and the assessment that does settle it is free.
