Ten years of one household sat on one portable drive: all my life pictures and documents

What failed, and why.
That message is about drivers rather than disks. Windows writes it when it associates a device with a driver it is not certain about, and it sits in the properties of hardware in perfect health. It says nothing about the platters or the pictures. The real fault is still unnamed, and four candidates produce what she was seeing: the board that turns USB into the connector on the disk, the firmware the disk keeps on its own platters, the file system, or the mechanism. From outside the case they are indistinguishable. A drive of ten years can also be failing quietly while presenting itself as a driver question. One disk is £300 + VAT on the published bands, and nothing is charged for the work that decides it.

What the bench did with it.
Power watched rather than assumed
The drive went onto a current-monitored supply before anything at all was asked of it, so its draw could be watched as it came up rather than inferred afterwards. Then out of the enclosure, onto the connector on the disk itself. That single move separates a bridge board that has stopped working from a disk that has, and it is worth making before any conclusion is drawn from a line Windows wrote about a driver.
Reach the disk, then read the disk
Addressed directly, the disk could be examined properly: whether it presented its storage at all, what its firmware reported, and what its own health figures had to say. That is the point at which a fault below the interface acquires a name and stops being a list of possibilities. Once it would read, the copy was made behind a write blocker at whatever rate the disk would hold.
Her own filing order, kept
The tree was rebuilt from the image exactly as she had built it, folder for folder, and written out to media she can use. Nothing was renamed, and nothing was emptied into one flat directory. Ten years of pictures and documents are only usable in the order their owner put them in.
What went home.
Everything reached her on new media, checked here before it went out. The line that had worried her described a driver association and nothing else, which is the ordinary way of it: the alarming sentence on screen is rarely the fault.
