Windows Lists It, and It Opens Nothing.
Ten years of one household's history was stored on a single portable hard drive containing all my life pictures and documents
, as she said, and there was no second copy of any of it. The portable drive is connected and does not open anything
. The drive itself has not vanished from view, and this is what is confusing her. Although the portable drive is shown under Devices and Printers and its property page displays an entry that reads like a diagnosis, stating that the device was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match
, this is simply a description and says nothing about the drive's condition. She had read that line, looked it up, and arrived somewhere between alarmed and none the wiser.

What failed, and why.
That error message is related to drivers, not disks. If you have a device plugged into your computer and Windows isn't sure what type of driver to use, it will place that same error message into the Properties section of your hardware, even when that hardware is in perfect health. It does not say anything about the pictures or how healthy the actual platters are. The real fault is still unnamed, and the four potential problems that could produce what she was seeing would be: the main circuit board inside the enclosure that converts USB to the disk's connector; the firmware that lives on the disk itself; the file system; or simply the mechanical parts of the disk. All of these are completely indistinguishable from outside the enclosure. An older unit can also fail slowly enough to present only as a driver issue. One disk is £300 + VAT based on the published bands, and there is zero cost for the troubleshooting needed to determine which of the four it is.

What the bench did with it.
Power watched rather than assumed
Since we put it on a supply that monitored current before asking it to do anything else, we were able to see what kind of draw it made coming up instead of trying to guess after the fact. Then we pulled it out of the enclosure and connected directly to the connector on the disk itself. That simple action separates a bridge board that has died from a disk that has died, and it is a step worth taking before drawing conclusions from something Windows has said about a driver.
Reach the disk, then read the disk
Once we were able to access the hard drive directly, we were able to check if it was presenting its storage at all; we were also able to look at what its firmware said about the situation; finally, we were able to examine what its self-assessed health report was saying. This was where a fault occurring below the interface became a definable fault and ceased to be a list of possible faults. Once it was readable, the copy was made behind a write blocker at the rate the hard drive would allow it to copy.
Her own filing order, kept
We rebuilt the file structure from the image exactly how she had created the original file structure (folder by folder) and saved the information to media that she could use. No folders had their names changed, nor were any of her ten years' worth of photos and documents placed into a single flat directory. Her documents and photos are only usable in the same order that she originally arranged them in.
What went home.
All information went back to her on new media; prior to sending the information out, we checked it all here. The line that was concerning her indicated a driver association and nothing else. There is no reason why an association should cause alarm when viewing the screen: most of the time, the alarming statement displayed on the screen is not the actual fault.
