The Machine Was Finished. The Disk Was Not.
The request was refreshingly plain, and it may well be as plain as it sounds. He had a 1TB WD out of my old iMac

What failed, and why.
A drive that looks fine usually is fine, and his reading of it was probably right from the start. The reason it still gets measured is that the two states are indistinguishable from outside: a disk part way into a fault reads normally, mounts normally and sounds normal, and what reveals it is somebody copying everything off in one sustained pass. Do that on ordinary equipment and a small fault becomes a large one. Ten minutes with the firmware and the defect tables settles it either way, and nothing is charged for the answer. The other wrinkle is the Mac volume, which a Windows machine will cheerfully declare unformatted, and which needs software that reads it properly rather than any spare computer.

What the bench did with it.
A healthy drive still gets measured
No caddy came into this job. The questions were put at firmware level, where a drive has less room to flatter itself: the SMART log to begin with, the reallocation counters next, the grown defect list after that, and a run of test reads working from the outer tracks inwards. The answers were thoroughly dull. Timings that did not waver, counters where they should be, and a mechanism in better order than the age of the machine had suggested.
Sound media is handled the same way
The write blocker went on regardless. On a drive in this condition it adds no measurable time, and it settles ahead of the fact anything anybody raises later: what went home is what arrived, with a log that records it. Handling does not get relaxed because a job looks easy.
The copy is where the work happens
The Mac volume opened out of the clone first time: the folder tree, the file names and the dates exactly as described. Everything was read from the copy after that, and nobody went back to the iMac, because there was nothing in it left to want.
What went home.
The whole of it went onto the USB drive he had supplied, opened and checked here before it left. He had reasoned the situation out for himself and been right, which saved him a repair he did not need. The disk is tested and its condition is on record, which is a good deal more than he had before he sent it. The price was the published one for a single drive: £300 + VAT.
