Merton is four postcode districts across three areas, laid over one small borough, which is the first thing to get right. SW19 is not only Wimbledon: it takes in Colliers Wood, Merton Park and Merton Abbey, and crosses into Wandsworth at Southfields. Mitcham is CR4, which is a Croydon postcode area, while Mitcham itself is firmly in Merton. Morden is SM4, a district shared with Sutton. The two economies are not the same. Wimbledon town centre and the Village are thick with solicitors, accountants, surveyors, architects, dental and medical practices and one-person consultancies, all holding records they must keep for other people and could not recreate. Eastward, the Willow Lane Business Improvement District at Mitcham runs to more than 150 businesses and over 2,500 people, and its own sector list is unusually precise: printing, engineering, food manufacturing, timber, motor repair, logistics, distribution, water treatment, waste management, IT services. Is there a counter in Wimbledon to leave it at?
No, and nowhere else in London either. One room at the intake laboratory holds the imaging rigs, the donor shelf and the bench, and it is the disk that moves rather than the equipment. Send it from any post office in SW19, CR4 or SM4 on a weekday, tracked and covered, and the box is generally opened by an engineer the next morning. The Mitcham unit's NAS has been a disk short since spring.
Off at the wall now, and no rebuild. A rebuild reads the whole set end to end, and it is that steady demand which the next worn disk does not survive. So the NAS travels whole — assembled, in its own case, nothing pulled. With a server or a RAID set the instruction reverses: every disk out, numbered in bay order.
