Firstly, the name: getting it wrong gives away who is doing the writing. Waltham Forest is an administrative name given in 1965 to three separate towns that never actually merged, Leyton, Walthamstow and Chingford, and nobody ever says the name out loud. It is not Waltham Abbey, EN9 in Essex, nor Waltham Cross, EN8 in Hertfordshire. The E17 postcode is the only postcode district completely inside the borough; however, the E4, E10 and E11 postcodes are shared with their neighbours, and Highams Park spans across both E4 and IG8. The Victoria line terminates at Walthamstow Central station, whilst the Central line does not stop at Walthamstow Central and runs through Leyton and Leytonstone instead. What this borough sends is made, not managed. Blackhorse Lane Ateliers operates a denim factory on Blackhorse Lane, and the Creative Enterprise Zone there defines its sectors as craft and fashion manufacturing, furniture making and design, in an area previously well known for printing machinery and leather goods. Therefore the items you may need to recover include pattern and grading files that are the production master of a garment on order; CAD and laser-cutter files for bespoke pieces; brewery batch and gyle records; a small printer's press-ready artwork from archives a client assumes are permanent; show files and plots from venue crews; and coursework servers at the sixth forms containing work students cannot re-sit. The other half of the E17 post is domestic: a young family, thousands of photographs, one Mac and one external hard drive. There is no way to physically hand the damaged unit over in Waltham Forest or anywhere else in London. Nobody says Waltham Forest. Do you mean Walthamstow?
All three towns, and the name is rather the point. Waltham Forest is an administrative label given in 1965 to three towns, Leyton, Walthamstow and Chingford, and people still give you the actual names of those towns instead of saying Waltham Forest out loud. E17 is the sole postcode district wholly within the borough; E4, E10 and E11 are each shared with a neighbour, and part of Highams Park falls under the IG8 postcode, with a Woodford Green post town. None of that changes anything, because it is the disk which travels.
Somebody said the disk is finished. Is that likely?
Mostly, no. A repair shop's job is finished when the machine runs again. Getting files off a disk that no longer answers calls for hardware imagers and a stock of matching donor parts, and this is a completely different type of business. Most weeks, we copy drives here that were given up on elsewhere, and since our examination service is free, you have nothing to lose when getting a certain answer.
Does posting from E17 cost extra?
No. Your payment rate is based upon the media type and the nature of the failure, and your postcode has no influence whatsoever. Regardless of where the unit came from, the examination is free, one figure is written down prior to opening the drive, and refusing it is free too. In most cases you only pay if we recover your data, and we also pay for the return postage.
Ours is a family laptop with the children's photographs on it. Do you take those?
This represents a large share of the E17 post: drives out of a household Mac or a spare-room laptop, and one external carrying every photograph of a child. We take just the drive itself, not the machine, and storage soldered to the board is not taken on; if you are unsure whether yours is soldered, call us first to discuss your options. We charge £250 + VAT for cards and sticks, and £300 + VAT for individual hard drive units, and prior to paying anything, you will approve a file list outlining the items included within the recovered data; in most cases you only pay if we recover your data. This facility does not process mobile phones or tablets.
